New York City has a world famous skyline. When you're visiting Manhattan, however, you are too close to the action to enjoy the backdrop of the buildings, the sky and the Hudson River. One way to see the skyline and other landmarks is to take a cruise around the harbor on a luxury yacht. There are several companies that provide a variety of chartering packages to meet your needs.
Contact Atlantic Yachting if you're interested in chartering your own vessel. The company has sailboats that can accommodate parties up to six people. You'll enjoy drinks and gourmet catering. The most popular cruise departs from the 79th Street Boat Basin, sailing south along the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge. Guests can customize their itinerary to meet their exact requirements. Atlantic Yachting does not provide public cruises; each yacht must be privately chartered.
Forbes Magazine has included the Hudson River in its rundown of the most beautiful rivers in the world. We agree.
We love this antique beer can with a nautical theme!
Eco Salon has a great story about learning to sail in Manhattan with Atlantic Yachting.
Just a snippet:...Atlantic is laid-back and warm, yet professional and replete with fully knowledgeable (witty and musically talented) captains and crew. At just six years old, Atlantic has a boutique feel, which is refreshing when attempting something new. It’s located at the 79th Street Boat Basin and cast against what looks like (from afar) to be a stunning and glittery Hudson River. Simply put, it’s a nice spot to learn to sail in a two-day weekend crash course.Read the full article here.
Today's New York Times has a great story about the capture of the Schooner Enchantress as depicted in this wonderful etching.
Karen C on Yelp says:
Great time. Highly recommend as a way to see NYC like no other. All alone on a sailboat at night with the skyline in the background. Weather tried to hamper but we didn't let it. Appointment was at 7:00 pm for a three hour cruise. They called us at 6:00 to say they had checked the radar and that it would be raining at 7:00, would we like to push it out to 8:00 pm. We said no problem. Got there, it sprinkled, did the cruise, Tony and Kevin were great to sail with. What a beautiful night. Atlantic Yachting did everything we could have expected. It was a great experience. My sister-in-law and I purchased this as a birthday gift for my husband. After being in the crowds on the street and pretty much everywhere you go, its funny to think about a million people on Manhattan and just the five of us all alone out on the water looking back on it all. Very relaxing.
Watch for the graceful Eagle to glide into New York Harbor on Friday morning, August 5. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of her construction in Hamburg, the tall ship is en route from New Bedford, Mass. to New York City, passing her home port of New London, CT, where she is used as a training ship for cadets from the Coast Guard Academy.
"At 295 feet long, Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes, as well as the only active square-rigger in the United States government service," says Hope Wright, USCG Auxiliary Division Staff Officer.
One of our guests last week sent us these gorgeous photos she took during her sail.
On a visit to the Frick Collection this week, we saw a number of beautiful paintings depicting nautical scenes, bays, and ships at sea by J.W.M. Turner.
Full sail headed towards Manhattan.
Rob is our newest team member. He doesn't look like he's working hard, but that's part of the job.
Rob grew up in South Carolina and learned to sail on his family's Benteau in the Caribbean. He has also raced 420's on the Carolina coast with his brother, Russell, who also works for us.
You'll find Rob working on our Private Sailboat Charters throughout the Summer.

Did you know you can learn to sail right here in the city? Atlantic Yachting gives great lessons - and five minutes after you're off the boat, you're right back in the center of everything.
We took three courses through Atlantic Yachting: basic sailing, on a 24' boat; coastal cruising, on a gorgeous 42' Beneteau; and bareboating, which prepares you to charter your own boat somewhere gorgeous. (We're heading to the BVI!)
The instructors are fantastic - extremely knowledgeable and very personable as well. You will feel very comfortable whether you have experience sailing, like my husband, or are a novice like me. Lessons are done in small groups, so everyone gets a turn at the tiller, but you'll also get some time to enjoy the sun and the wind on your face.
You can also take private lessons, which are expensive but worth every penny. The instructors go out of their way to make sure you get the most benefit from your time on the boat. I recommend you discuss sailing conditions with your instructor when you book a private lesson; they know when the wind will be best, and can help you schedule your boat time to maximize your chances of good wind.
I am particularly impressed with the customer service. The American Sailing Association lost our membership records, and we were afraid we would have to take all our classes again in order to re-certify. Atlantic Yachting worked with us to get our certifications re-issued in the minimum possible time, and even waived the testing fees. I could not have asked for a better resolution.
In short: if you live in the city and you're considering learning to sail, you can't do better than Atlantic Yachting.
A perfect sunset after a gorgeous day of sailing!
